3 Steps To Find The Perfect Hobby

A man needs a mission. A man needs to have interests that go beyond his mundane activities.

As proposed by Psychologist Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi, such activities  are essential for a man to reach a state of Flow. Also known as “the zone”, this is the state you reach when you are fully focused on performing a task, you are in control and you do not think about anything else. This is an essential part of life and most importantly, of happiness.

You will not go through with every single new hobby or activity you pick up. You might end up losing interest, it might become too expensive or maybe too time consuming. So, the key here is to find a suitable and sustainable activity and dedicate yourself to it. This will, more often than not, lead to experimenting with different things. You do not know that you like to paint until you pick up a paint brush – fact.

That art class you’ve always wanted to attend, that language you’ve always wanted to learn, that instrument you’ve always dreamt about being able to play, whatever it is, just go ahead and do it.

You really must focus your energy into something other than work, home and basic social life. You need something to stimulate you as an individual, something pleasurable and challenging.

Here are some easy steps you can take in order to find your perfect hobby:

1. Write down all the things you like – everything you take pleasure from (this can be anything, from doing martial arts, playing video games, watching football, going to the beach – just write down everything).

2. Try to find an activity where you can incorporate an element of each of the things you like. This will become a screening exercise as you will rule out some activities straight away, mostly due to availability, location and cost.

3. Narrow it down to three activities and make your priority to start doing at least one of them in the next ten days. This is more than enough time to research and prepare anything in advance before you start. Introduce another activity or two, depending on your availability and financial circumstances.

See, it’s not that hard.
